MEDIA RELEASE9th June 2007Dubai Flying Dragons Fly Into Town For The HeliAds Lamma International Dragon Boat Festival 2007The 42-member squad of the Dubai Flying Dragons dragon boat club, who landed in the SAR on Friday, took to the water today at Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island as they trained in preparation for Sunday’s HeliAds Lamma International Dragon Boat Festival 2007. Based in UAE, the Dubai Flying Dragons are the largest dragon boat club in the Gulf principality and are competing in the new Lamma races as part of their preparation for the World Dragon Boat Championships being held in Penang, Malaysia in 2008. “We’re all very excited to be here!” said Dubai Team Captain, Ms Wai Yin Chang. “Most of our squad have never been to Hong Kong before and are really looking forward to meeting other teams and competing at the Lamma Festival,” Ms Chang continued. “The Lamma Ladies have a good reputation in international dragon boat circles and we decided their new event, with a 500-metre length course, would be excellent experience for our teams as we aim for the World Championships next year,” said Ms Chang. The Dubai Flying Dragons have entered teams in the Men’s Open, Women’s Open and two teams in the Mixed Open race categories. In a strong field featuring 55 teams, Dubai will compete against local Hong Kong dragon boat teams including the Lamma Ladies, Lamma Fishermen Association, Tong Fuk Sports Club and the Island Paddle Club. “We have a great line up of teams for the Festival, many of whom have been training on the water four to five times per week for the last several months,” said Tournament Director Mr Brad Tarr. “It’s going to be an excellent day’s dragon boat racing and it’s fantastic that the Dubai Flying Dragons have come here to compete,” Mr Tarr continued. The Heliads Lamma International Dragon Boat Festival 2007 commences at 9am on Sunday 10th June on Tai Wan To Beach, Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island, Hong Kong. Finals will take place from 4.15pm followed by an awards presentation ceremony on the beach. Spectators are welcome and entry is free of charge. Additional ferry sailings have been provided from Outlying Island Pier 4 in Central. See the full ferry timetable. Media contact: |
